Last Seasons Success - Williamson Cup Final
On Thursday 9th May the Norwich Dons Cavaliers travelled to play Broadland in the Williamson Cup Final. However these Cavaliers were a far stronger team than the usual league line up with Martin Walker on top board, Geoff Moore playing his first match for the Dons this season pushing Dave Dempster to board three with Steve Moore on four.
I was a non-playing Captain and arrived with Biran Shah to watch and support and found that both teams had started before 7.30 with the Broadland line up – Gerald Moore, Roy Hughes, Ken McEwan and Paul Badger indicating a very tight match.
On making our first assessment of the boards Biran noticed that the two highest graded players in the building had failed to notice their clock had not started!
Greg Tebble was also in attendance acting as official photographer so the Dons actually outnumbered the Broadland members present leading Ken to ask “Did you bring a team bus?.
All four games were very tight and intense. In each case time pressure came into play with board 4 being one on time with Steve having only seconds left himself.
Biran and I watched the drama unfold trying to understand what was going on (especially with Geoff’s game). The games all finished close to the maximum time with the Dons winning boards 1, 2 and 4 to shade the match 3-1 and keep the Williamson Cup at the Dons for another year.
The match was played in a very good spirit and Broadland were gracious in defeat. As I write this the Cavaliers are due to play Broadland in the league tomorrow – I fear the result may be somewhat different!
