Internal Competitions
(a) Club Championship The club championship is the most prestigious of our internal competitions and is split into two sections, The Championship and The Challengers. The Championship consists of a six player "all play all" twice, with the winner awarded the title of Club Champion. . The Challengers compete in a Swiss style tournament of 6 rounds spread throughout the season. The top two players of the Challengers replace the bottom two players of the Championship for the following season.
(b) Club Knockout There is also a club knockout competition open to all members. Pairings are drawn at random for each round.
(c) The Les Bell Cup For those players graded under 130, there is the Les Bell Cup. This competition is structured either as an all-play-all once, or a Swiss format, depending on the number of entrants.
(d) The John Swan Trophy One Monday in mid-September is reserved for the John Swan trophy, a quick-play event consisting of 6 – 8 rounds of 10-minute games.
(e) The Bob Royall Trophy The last Club night before Christmas is likewise reserved for The Bob Royall Trophy. This has been run in a variety of formats but has recently been 10-minute games of chess variants including Fischer random and pocket knight.
(f) The Chairmans Trophy - This competition is designed to encourage graded games against other Club Members so that you can enjoy as much “serious” chess as you want.
Entry to any or all of the above wide range of teams and competitions is included in your annual membership fee, a true glut of chess and only available at the NORWICH DONS CHESS CLUB.
Trophies are awarded to the winners of all competitions and to the runners-up of the Club Championship, Challengers and Knockout. All games played under standard time controls are graded free of charge.
